Really? The Chinese have no laws preventing them from spying on whomever they want in their own country and it bleeds heavily into others. They also have the capacity for almost universal global internet surveillance. They could be spying on you right now and legally, there wouldn't be much you could do about it.

I suspect the difference in actual practice between what the Chinese are doing and our intelligence agencies are doing is negligible at best.

Only difference is that our government PRETENDS it's not ok while simultaneously creating a secret court that is basically a rubber stamp to whatever intel wants to do.

Hell. It's almost arguable that the Chinese approach, being more honest, is better. Regardless though, I don't think there's an appreciable difference between having a wife who tells you on the way out the door she's going to frick your friend and having one who does it while pretending she's not.
