Because there wasn't enough damage done when he was Secretary of Defense, they figured he needed a run as POTUS. 
Still though, I'm hyped for sure. I think the shortened number of episodes will help keep the story line more concise.

More realistic than a community organizer who hasn't really done much of anything becoming President.
