here is the depth picture from the article I linked. It's hard to comprehend how far down this ping sound is coming from, but this helps.

the towed pinger locator reaches a depth of 4600 feet
the maximum known diving depth of the deepest diving mammal is 9816
the Titanic was found at 12,500 ft. It took 73 years to locate the wreckage
the flight data recorders from Air France Flight 447 were found at 13,100 ft. Took 2 years to find
the maximum dive depth of Alvin, the first deep sea submersible capable of carrying passengers is 14,763
the depth the signal is being detected is around 15,000 ft
