Really depends on the movie and the kid.
Took my kids (3 and 1.5) to see Shrek 2 in the theater and they loved it (kept their attention and they behaved). However, they were bored with Home on the Range about 15 minutes in and started wandering (and that came out about a month before). Saw The Incredibles later in the year and they were mesmerized.
