I think it's pretty widely accepted the term "assault rifle or weapon" refers to semi auto rifles that are similar in appearance to military full auto versions. It's an inaccurate description, but that's what people think when you say 'assault rifle". When you say "deer rifle" they think bolt action with a scope.

First - I disagree with you completely.
Second - Even if it were generally true, the press seems to go out of its way to get people to conflate semi-automatic with their select fire versions when they do stories and take polls about so-called "assault weapons".
So, even if it were "widely accepted" for a brief period of history, the effort to demonize the term, and therefore the weapons and their law-abiding owners, has nixed all of that.

The line has been blurred a bit. People use paramilitary style rifles for more than target practice these days.
