they were the preseason #1 ranked team in the country yet are limping into the postseason possibly unranked in the new polls. The freshmen class of Randle and the Harrison twins was being hyped as possibly the best ever. Last year was a massive disappointment for them too in losing to Robert Morris in the first round of the NIT.

How much goodwill does the national title two years ago buy him?

If they strip it from him, not much.

Preseason rankings suck. Pretty sure everyone can agree this team never should've received a number 1 ranking before ever playing a game.

source: Kentucky basketball this year.

Considering how average UK for a good time before they hired him, that buys him plenty of goodwill.

Normal Kentucky fans (and there are a few of us), knew that this is what you get with Cal. The best players in HS want to play for him, and the end result is a lot of start power out of HS who are one and done kind of players. If you know this as a UK fan, you can predict that this will happen from time to time.

Now with that said, I thought this years team would be light years ahead of last year, again, based on rankings alone. This year proves that the transition from HS to college can be difficult, especially if you haven't been challenged a lot along the way.

Randle is the real deal and will be a top 5 pick. WCS will be a lottery pick, but I expect the rest to stay. Young might go, but he's at best a streaky shooter with little defensive skill. Not sure he's ready. I think the Harrison's stay along with Johnson and Lee (he might transfer).
They have another great class for next year, and if this holds true, they will be a favorite again.

Last year's team was odd, the PG we were anticipating being so good, didn't pan out, and it really takes a great PG in Cal's system.

He's been here 5 years, we have 2 final fours, 3 elite 8's in the previous 4 and who knows what will happen with this year's team. They could make a deep run, or go out in the 1st round.

Cal will be here as long as he wants to be, which I don't think will be that much longer, maybe 3-4 years. I see him retiring while still fairly young and going into some charitable work. He seems to have a real heart for it.

Cal will have them competitive again once he stops trying to sell kids on the idea that Kentucky will get you to the NBA the fastest. He needs to retain some of the guys that know their role as complimentary players instead of trying to form an all-star team every year.

Guys like Ryan Harrow and Kyle Wiltjer weren't great last year but they certainly could have helped this team with outside shooting and leadership. Instead they were basically forced out as "not good enough" to play for Kentucky.

Last year wasn't anymore of a disappointment than losing in the elite 8 when it comes down to it. UK fans want NCs and absolutely anything else is a disappointment.

That's the nature of the beast when you recruit one and done players. Every year the team is massively different, and if your recruits don't pan out you struggle. But when they do, well see 2 years ago
