He hunts for the Daily Doubles, which are usually in the higher money clues. So by the time he's found both of them, most of the high-money clues are gone, and the other contestants don't have a daily double to make up ground on him.

He still has to answer the questions right.
And, if other people buzz in faster with the right answers on all the other squares, then they'd beat him.

exactly

if you firmly believe that you are the superior player and that the more level the playing field the more likely you are to win what you most want to do is prevent another player from taking a big gamble and hitting it to make up ground.

If however you are up against a player that is probably better than you the opposite strategy should apply. Start with the lower value clues, build up a small kitty by ringing in and getting right the easier questions. After obtaining some sort of pot you hope to get lucky by picking a daily double and doubling your money later in a round.
