Episode 1 could have been a good movie.
I've always thought about how awesome it would have been if they would have played boy Ani darker, having his slave existence be brutal, have this result in his being psychologically damaged to some extent and play that element into the character development leading towards the Dark Side turn.
When we got a bushy headed, happy, rosie cheeked, blonde scamp right from 80's family sitcom central casting, it was over.

I have mixed feelings about all three of the prequels. I feel like Ep 1 was needed to lay the foundation for the rise of the Empire and to show Palpatine's behind the curtain maneuvers.
Also, Anakin being discovered at such a young age ties in with the idea that Jedi were identified very early and tried their entire life.
However, with that being said...
I hated the immaculate Force conception story. Also, the fact that they have Qui-Gon in there blows a couple of big plotholes based on the original movies. First, we see Kenobi as Qui-Gon's padwan, when in Ep V Ben's ghost tells Luke he will go to Dagobah and learn from "Yoda, the Jedi master who instructed me." When the f did Yoda instruct Kenobi, unless it was supposed to be when he was a little kid before becoming a padwan. Also, in the conversation on Dagobah, Ben refers to being angry and reckless when he was Luke's age, something we never see in the prequels.
I would have liked to have seen Kenobi and Anakin be about the same age, and bond because they have the same types of feelings of anger and recklessness. However, Kenobi overcomes it to become a Jedi, while Anakin falls prey to it.
Also, I feel like the whole Padme character was created just to have a mother for Luke & Leia, as well as give a reason for Leia to be a princess.
