re: Hey nerds: What's the best Tolkien book that isn't LOTR or The Hobbit?

Seriously? That's 13 times worse than trying to read The Silmarillion.

What do you mean Josh? Those books read nothing like an encyclopedia. Storytelling on par with Tolkien but just 4 times as long as LOTR. Granted, wished it would have wrapped up about 3 books earlier but it was a hell of a saga.

Silmarillion
It is actually my favorite book to read by him. It's a lot to digest but it is awesome IMO.

If you listen to this guy you might end up dead from boredom.
Malazan Book of the Fallen by Steven Erikson
or if by some chance you hadn't read them
Dune 1-6 is the greatest sci-fi/fantasy series of all time imo.

I read The Hobbit and LOTR when I was eleven or so and they spoiled me for anything else. I haven't been able to read fantasy since.

I've never really liked fantasy. I always liked sci-fi a lot more. I think the only other "fantasy" book I've ever read was Watership Down, if that even counts.
Now after reading LOTR I'm not sure what else I could read that is going to live up to it. I'm going to give Simarillainajghafjkgaljk a whirl, but if that doesn't work out I'm not sure I can ever give fantasy another try
