Use their muzzle and throat gauges to pick out a nice shooter that measures less than 1.5 or so. The fellows who work there will help with any questions. I bought several and then started to get pickier to get nice wood, low number serial number, and something during or near war years.
Good luck!

Thanks for the advice. I'll enlist their help for sure.

Chessie, from my understanding they grade and sell Garands there. However, as with all milsurps, no two are the same, even of the same grade. If you go there in person you can probably get closer to what you're looking for than luck of the draw. I'll be looking for a good shooter w metal in good shape. Not too concerned about a pristine stock.

The rifles have tags showing what they gauged. Anything that gauges less than a 4 overall will shoot just fine. Brand new M1's left the factories gauging over 5 and still passed accuracy tests.

Good luck OP, the CMP South Sales office was pretty much cleaned out when I went by in October. No Service grade rifles, very few Field grade, and only a handful of sniper variants with $3000 tags on them. I'm glad I picked up my SASSP (1/2 gauge) when I did last year. They are transitioning from sales to more like a repair/service type of shop where people can bring in M1's for repair and modification. They are teaching clinics on maintenance and competitive shooting and I think are in the process of developing a new range in the area.
