Within living memory that flag was used as a white supremacist symbol in the South. It is not so much that it was carried into battle in 1864; it is what it stood for post-Reconstruction until as late as the 1970's. Black Americans do not take it lightly, nor should they. They know what it meant in the South from 1880 to 1980. (And, I could probably have two of those license plates myself because of my ancestors.)
