He's always been a good actor but was kind of floating through the early 2000's with a bunch of romantic comedies. His talent was always there though. I guess he got tired of hearing that he wasn't good and stepped it up a bit. Glad he did, the guy is killing it right now.

This is the one that did it for me...
Reign of Fire (2002). I had to keep reminding myself that the bald, bearded guy was the same guy from Dazed and Confused and the trailers for The Wedding Planner. When I realized I had to remind myself about it, I understood that he had some acting chops and was just not picking the best projects (at that time).

except I would say he was doing those rom coms to make enough money to be able to do the lower budget films he has been going with lately.
