It's actually the opposite of the 5.56/.223 thing.

5.56 <- 223 ok
.223 <- 5.56 not ok

and

.308 <- 7.62 ok
7.62 <- 308 not ok


That's not entirely correct. People will cite the Go/No Go gauge spec differences and case dimensions as why .308 commercial loads are not safe in mil surp 7.62 rifles. The real reason is more akin to why you shouldn't run most commercial .30-06 ammo in a milsurp M1 Garand. It's not the chamber, brass, or pressure as much as the burn rate which affect gas operated semi-autos.

Not entirely, but by SAAMI standards, I know .308 Winchester has higher chamber pressures and thicker brass. So I know you shouldn't run 308 Winchester in a 7.62x51 chamber.
