However
I would never take a shot that I would be counting on the inability of a round to over penetrate to not hit an innocent person (child)

While windows and sheet rock are necessary building items, they are terrible at stopping bullets. Just because you can't see them, doesn't make them safe (not saying you said this by any means).
Furthermore, this is exactly why there are pistol caliber carbines. Even cops know that you don't need a 308 to clear a house. Wanting 30 plus inches of penetration is like using a sledgehammer to drive a roofing nail.
