Researchers Lidar Sapir-Hen and Erez Ben-Yosef from Tel Aviv University have discovered what may be a discrepancy in the history laid out in the Bible.

Using carbon-dating to determine the age of the oldest-known camel bones, the researchers determined that camels were first introduced to Israel around the 9th century BCE.

The Hebrew Bible, or Old Testament refers to camels as pack animals as early as the story of Abraham. Though there is no archaeological evidence of Abraham's life, many in the religious and scientific communities, including Chabad and the Associates For Biblical Research, cite the 20th century BCE as his time of birth. If the new evidence is correct, however, this suggests discrepancies between the Bible and human history as explained by science.

The researchers scoured ancient copper production sites in the Aravah Valley, where camel bones were only present in sites active in the last third of the 10 century and the 9th century BCE. Sapir-Hen and Ben-Yosef write in their report:

"[The camel bones] demonstrate a sudden appearance of camels at the site, following a major change in the organization of production in the entire region."

This suggests that camels were introduced to the region abruptly, perhaps by Egyptians along Mediterranean trade routes.

Dr. Robert Harris, an Associate Professor at the Jewish Theological Seminary, says this shouldn't come as a shock to the theological community.

“While these findings may have been published recently, those of us on the inside have known the essential facts for a generation now," Harris conveyed to HuffPost Religion through associates at JTS. "This is just one of many anachronisms in the Bible, but these do not detract from its sanctity, because it is a spiritual source, not a historical one.”

Biblical archaeology is understandably an imperfect science. Archaeologist William Dever explained in an interview with PBS several years ago:

quote:

We want to make the Bible history. Many people think it has to be history or nothing. But there is no word for history in the Hebrew Bible. In other words, what did the biblical writers think they were doing? Writing objective history? No. That's a modern discipline. They were telling stories. They wanted you to know what these purported events mean."

They had to use carbon dating to disprove parts of the bible. Watch this: The ark held two of every animal. Can I get a research grant to disprove that. And I would consider myself religious BTW

Where in Genesis did it say Abraham domesticated the first camels? I'm confused.

Just because you haven't found evidence of something doesn't mean it doesn't exist. It's like screening for cancer today. Just because a screening comes up negative for cancer doesn't mean you don't have cancer.

No one living today can unequivocally say what they were doing back then.

I still don't understand the "inaccuracy".

I don't see where they are "pack" animals.

I see where they were herded together as wealth for the families. That's no where close to the same thing, only a dunce in biblical interpretation would come to that conclusion.

That would be like saying dogs were never domesticated because you were a dog breeder.

i don't know why people can't understand this.

and im not talking about the "young earth" religious zealots. those people have a 4" thick steel veil over their eyes.

Germans. Or Hebrews as the case may be. In any event, the camel story is old news. See: Don't Know Much About the Bible by Kenneth C. Davis.

everyone should quit trying to convert everyone else. To either side.

Then it'll just work itself out naturally.

So many fails in this thread....

quote:

what does BCE refer to?

It's a politically correct term which attempts to hide the fact that it's referring to the time before Christ.

quote:

For some reason I find the idea of two kangaroos on the arc to be one of the funniest things I've ever considered.

The "arc"? Please, read the story before you make such comments.

The Hebrew bible doesn't use the word "camel", the Hebrew bible uses the word "ga^ma^l", meaning a 'load bearing animal'. Why don't these folks who write such articles research such simple things?

I feel a bit dumb, but I missed the discrepancy. Can someone point it out to me?

So just because camel bones only appear at this one site in the Aravah Valley in the 10th and 9th century BCE, they conclude that no camels existed anywhere in all of Israel until that time? Well that's a bit of stretch.

I wonder if my poor dog that died when I was 10 and we buried in the back yard will be discovered by archeologists in a couple thousand years and hailed as proof that no dogs existed west of the Mississippi River until the late 20th century?

This is just poor science. First of all, a lack of evidence that something exists does not preclude the possibility that it does. The gorillas of africa were thought to be a myth by european traders and colonists for 200 years until they were discovered by missionaries and soldiers.

Plus, the obvious, the hebrew torah never says camel.
