I didn't say they closed here overall due to a bad economy .. The O'Neal location shut down due to a dumb business decision .. They blamed the location economy, which wasn't true .. They changed their hours drastically and killed their business .. They knew the monthly rent when they signed the lease on O'Neal .. City Cafe is doing fine in that spot with overall average food .. The difference is just management and good ownership .. Plain and simple ..

That's not entirely true. Though the family that owns the Broken Egg in Mandeville did open both locations in BR originally, the reasons for closing weren't because of the "bad BR economy." The O'Neal spot shut down because business sucked and rent was absurd. The Old Hammond location changed from Another Broken Egg to La Lou (under the same owners). Then, La Lou shut down following some legal issues with the owner of Another Broken Egg Franchise. The family still owns the Broken Egg in Mandeville though.
As Rag pointed out they knew the rent/lease going in and City Cafe has flourished in the same location. Baton Rouge didn't suck. ABE sucked and he bit off way more than he could chew. Rent is rent and if you blame a failed enterprise on that then you need to reevaluate your business skills.
And...it leads to this. If he thought rent at George O Neil was bad , he then stepped out and BOUGHT the old Chalet Brandt building from the family that owns Mandinas for quite a few hundred thousand dollars more than what they paid for it just about a year earlier. Food was mediocre, prices did not match level of food (nor do they now-at all ABE locations) large mortgage due, franchise conflicts because franchise fees can't be met, change name to La Lou, serve same food, lawsuit, roasted chicken.
Not Baton Rouge sucked. Not absurd rent. Bad business on the owner. Not the first to stretch too thin nor will they be the last but it was their own fault, plain and simple. To place blame elsewhere is simply denying their lack of intelligence of demographics. Nothing to be ashamed of but no reason to not accept responsibility.
