I was in darkness, nearly given up to hopelessness, my chains growing heavier by the minute in this fetid hell, when there, amongst the squeaking of rats and the screams of the doomed, I heard footsteps. Not the heavy plodding footfalls of the guards or the maddened, panicked run of some futile escapee, but the steady, sure steps of someone with power.
"So this is how it ends." I muttered to no one in particular. "Clap me in irons, let me rot, forgotten as an email from a lurker begging for noodz, and then lop my head off. Figures."

I could see him standing there, his chickeny helm glistening in the torchlight, red and white gold. If gods came down to earth, they'd adopt a similar visage.
"Any last words?" The Great and powerful pollo asked, his voice thrumming with power and poise.

In fact, I did. In the beginning i had prepared a long speech laying out my innocence. Yet my time here, and the presence of the great feathered one made me realize that no words would matter.
So I said what it all amounted to.

The famous fowl brought his axe up, the bloody steel ghastly in the flickering flames, and from nowhere a pair of sunglasses descended to shield his eyes from what was sure to be a mess.

He cried as he brought the massive blade down in a terrible arc.

I closed my eyes, waiting for that razor's edge to sever sinew and flesh, to end my suffering.
