I don't know, just out of an excercise of curiousity. You seem at least interested in it, I don't think it would be too odd for you to try to download the "official" bitcoin client.
Anyways, it's clunky and takes days to download the entire blockchain. Not user friendly for technophiles much less average people.
Dark Wallet will be a light wallet. Very easy to use in a nice form factor, plus it does all the work for you.
