You do realize that West Virginia reached its peak in the Rich Rodriguez days, right? WVU is just not a perennial power and is not a traditional powerhouse program. Stewart led them to three straight 9 win seasons and got pushed out. That's not fair at all, even in the SEC. West Virginia fans expected the impossible from him, and now we see where they are without him. I'd die too if I received the treatment and slander he did.

What treatment and slander did Stewart receive? Maybe from the fans, but being bashed by fans comes with the territory of D1 coaching. He never should have been head coach at WVU. He was fired for going 8-25 at VMI.

Yes, he won 9 games a year, but that was in spite of coaching. WVU was much more talented than any other Big East teams during that time, yet continually underachieved, letting freaking UConn win the Big East because the WVU couldn't score more than 10 points in Storrs.

also, he wasn't fired for losing.

Stewart resigned in 1996 after making a racially-insensitive comment towards a player regarding his on-field behavior. After what he believed to be excessive celebration by one of his players following a play, he told him "Don't let your actions give people reason to call you a n-----."
