Every new rig i've seen has pretty much eliminated the need for third casing running. Not sure what other services franks offers but I could see them getting phased out of the market in the next few years. Drilling contractors can pretty much run anything you need now.

Bs, there's a shite load of new work coming to the gulf in the next 6 months, with wells scheduled for the next 3 years.

10-12 drill ships, alone, that I've heard about. Not to mention overseas work, that Frank's has it's hand in.

Frank's is building a state of the art new facility, I really don't see them doing that with the rigs moving to running casing themselves.

I can see it being a real possibility in 30-40 years.

How are these rigs going to service their tools?

Where are they going to keep this massive inventory of equipment, that it takes to run each string?

To do it in house, they would have to build their own Frank's or Weatherford to support their rigs with tools.

Their only option is purchasing Frank's, Weatherford, OES, Premiere, Timco, etc (LA based tubular services)

shite, so the new rigs can do it on their own.. how are all these old land rigs, barges, jackups, and platform rigs going to do it on their own? Most don't have enough room for the equipment it takes for one string

Wow you're an angry guy, anyway, let show you what is being put on every drillship leaving the samsung yard in Korea.

LINK

This makes up all your drill pipe and you just slide in a "cassette" that is about the size of a big dresser to be able to make up every casing size you wouldn't make up with belt tongs. Maintenance? Done by the mechanics on the rig same as they would maintain the iron roughneck. Only thing we use franks for is spider elevators to be able to run casing in stands out of the derrick and that will be phased out soon.

Land drilling operations? most everything going on in the US is manufactured drilling and lots of the new rigs i've seen come with a CRT.

LINK

I'm not saying franks is about to go out of business, just saying rigs are starting to come with this stuff and it blows casing crews out of the water.

The rig crews can barely do the minimum task required at their position. I saw a crew of 3 roughnecks and an AD struggle for 10 minutes trying to fit the right pair of slips a few days ago. This is on a new deepwater drillship. I think they will leave running casing to the pros. Unless they want a trainwreck for an operation. This is on every rig due to turnover and it will only get worse with a lot more rigs being built. Guys are getting driller positions with only a few years experience, which is scary.

100% agree with all of that. They need specialist, in the form of service companies.

They'd drop string after string

These CRT tools (startint with Tesco) and iron roughnecks have been out for years.

I used to be in charge of CRT tool allocation at FI. They built 3 different types of CRT tools in house mostly used on land and internationally. I don't believe many customers are comfortable running CRT's offshore. Much tougher to maintain and troubleshoot than conventional casing tools.

I've been on about 7 different drillships over the last couple years and not a single one has a iron roughneck capable of running anything but drill pipe, and I've never seen a CRT on any deepwater.

Yea, company men would love the downtime while in open hole. Most haven't even seen one.

They only go up to like what? 6.5"? And must be serviced, stress and function tested before each use.

My whole point being Frank's and the Gulf is going to be killing it for the foreseeable future.

I switched to Weatherford last year so hopefully old Franks leaves us some work. Franks and Weatherford have most of the good Deepwater rigs, OES has a lot of work but not many caddilac rigs.

Yeah I'm In the field, too many perks to pass up right now at 26. Just bought a house and trying to settle down with my lady. Once I get all that behind me I'll look into getting back into the office. I don't care for the people or lifestyle offshore, but I'm pushing through it for now.
