Would Benson be willing to pay $17M for Boozer to go away this offseason? If so, it may work, but you would basically be paying $18M to make Gordon go away. I just don't see that being a sound decision.

No. Only Chicago can amnesty Boozer. We'd probably be hoping to flip him as an expiring next year, but honestly big expirings ain't what they used to be. You don't see them move very often any more. If you get stuck with Boozer and Gordon ends up opting out then you basically made yourself worse for nothing. Just because the Bulls have interest doesn't mean the Pelicans do.
