It really depends on where you end up working, how long term you are looking, how much you want to spend and how much going out you plan on doing.
I'd suggest looking in the area between Shepherd and Montrose and West Gray and 59. There are some somewhat sketchy areas in there and it really varies block to block, but its a central location and I know of a lot of people that have found good rent houses in the area. I rented a place just off of Shepherd near Westheimer and liked it.
