She gets out of her shadow, but on Dottie's graces. She wouldn't even be in the league if not for Dottie.
Early on, Dottie competes with her whether it's races through the yard or on the playing field. When Kit rounds third and Dottie is shocked to see her coming, a light goes off. It's time to let Kit win the race.

Once again, this is not Kits story. Its Dotties.
Dottie realizes after she hits the shot up the middle for the go ahead run that she's ruining her sisters life. She came back because of her competitiveness, but ultimately she realized that it doesn't matter to her. She beats her sister again, and Dottie will still wake up tomorrow and go home. If Kit loses, her dream is dead.
