In the 1970s, LSU had the best athletic facilities in the SEC--new basketball arena, new track stadium, new tennis stadium, new field house, the new natitorium was in the works (of course, Tiger Stadium and Alex Box were old but were still two great facilities). Heck, as recently as the early 1990s, LSU used to host the SEC indoor track championship every other year because Florida was the only other SEC school that even had a field house! Now LSU is behind the rest of the conference in most facilities...
