No you don't need a lawyer for small claims court but check out the filing fees and decide if it's worth the effort. Also think about how easy you think it'll be to collect on a judgment if you win. The sheriff doesn't put a gun to her head to make her pay a judgment.

These people have their main home in Covington, this rental house in Lakeview and her husband has a plumbing business on the Southshore so they should have plenty of money to be able to pay. I am sure she could get into some pretty big trouble if she didn't pay and was ordered to by the judge. However, I might be wrong, I have never sued anyone.
