I like these ideas about hiking and white water rafting...that is what I am hoping to get into.
Bringing the wife too...should we try and stay somewhere other than downtown Denver for the first few days or just rent a car?

If you go to Denver and don't get to enjoy what the mountains offer, you've wasted one hell of an opportunity. Avoid any place (trail, etc) that has a bus parked at the trailhead though

If you want to do the hiking and rafting thing definitely just rent a car and head west.
For example that is what I did over Thanksgiving. Spent one night in each of these places and moved on: Breck, Leadville, Boulder, Estes Park(actually 2 nights here), Denver.
