Sounds like grandpa was one room over. Like a lot of moms and dads and grandparents. You don't actually watch them every minute of the day. Hell, maybe he was and went to fix them a sandwich.
The only mistake I see him make, and a lot of people make is not securing loaded weapons from kids.

All he had to do was put the gun high enough that they couldn't reach it. They're little kids, of course they're going to at least look under the beds. He didn't even need a safe, just a shelf high enough. This is why my guns stay locked up when my daughter is over.
