It was such a tragedy. But Crystal-Balling it, I think if he had any kind of real success at LSU, he would be off to the Big 10 pretty quickly. The SEC was good but in the early 80's the networks were ALL about the Big 10 and Notre Dame.

Relative to today, SEC and southern schools in general were still considered backwoods and coached by Jed Clampett's cousin. That's a bit dramatic but you get the idea.

Once SEC schools started to get on TV more, players stayed home rather than freeze to get on TV up north.
