Boot fit question...

Went to Cavenders out by Bass Pro in Denham Springs a week or so ago...
I found a pair of boots that I liked, but the D width I tried felt too narrow. I tried on a different boot of the same brand in EE and it felt great in the very short time I had it on my foot (with limited walking around space since it was pretty crowded in there).
So they ordered the boot in the wider width, and it arrived at my house today.
My first impression is that they are too big. My foot went in easier than I thought it should, and there is a bit of slippage at the heel (more than my current pair of a different brand).
I know different brands fit and wear a little differently, so my question is: How do you determine the proper boot fit? Is there something specific that you look for to make that decision?

Each boot is different. They will also stretch over time. I buy something that feels a little tight knowing that it'll stretch in a week or two. I basically walk around and go up on my tippy toes a few times to see if my heel comes up. If it does, the shoe is too big

I'm in the same boat. I wear a 13 tennis shoe, and depending on the brand of boots I've worn anywhere from 12D to 13EE. It all comes down to the brand of boot, then there are still variances in the fit because of the leather. It is very hard for me to find a boot that fits just right, but when I do, I wear them forever.

I'm usually okay with a little give, but what really bothers me is when the boot shaft is loose, resulting in it hitting my leg with every stride.
