Always get a dog if possible. A person will jump a deer but a dog will just bay it up and you can almost walk up there and cut their throat.

When having bad blood like that I think a good rule of thumb especially when it's this cold is to back out and let them sit. Letting a hit deer sit for longer can only help unless it's hot. Gut shot deer sometimes need to sit 3-4 hours or more to pass on. The more you jump them the more the guts tend to clog the hole and you loose your blood.
THat being said I hope you all find him, but always wait longer than you think unless you are 100% it's a solid hit.
