Watched this movie for the first time yesterday...great film and one hell of a soundtrack. Loved the recurring juxtaposition of "cool and un-cool" (rock and roll life on the road against the 'sweeter' lifestyle of William Miller, and especially, his mom) as well as William's coming of age story in general. Frances McDormand was great as ever.
Great scene with Philip Seymour Hoffman
The only currency in this bankrupt world is what you share with someone else when you're uncool
Found out afterwards that this is a semi-autobiographical film, as Crowe himself wrote for Rolling Stone in his teenage years and himself had an overprotective mother and broken family.
Any other fans on the Movie/TV board, or questions to ponder? Loved the movie, "Tiny Dancer" scene was just brilliant and took me back to my childhood when my dad's classic rock playlist would blare through the radio.

The extended cut DVD has the Tom Petty scene in full when he's playing with him and a girl in his hotel room. It's fantastic.

This is one I never wanted to see at the time, but have wanted to see for a while now since I've heard nothing but praise for years.

In the extended cut, he convinces his mom to let him go by proving rock music can be poetic by playing stairway to heaven, the whole song.
