Does not sound correct but it is.

This has what do with LSU? And why is it hard to believe?

Yes, it is and has been the last 4 years.

It is the ultimate commuter school. I am not sure how strong the alumni following is but it'd be like UNO having a football team if they were that size.

Many of those students aren't "traditional" college students. I believe they have campus housing for less than 10k.

I live near UCF and hang with a few current students. They still aren't at the level of FSU / Miami / OSU / LSU, etc. They have a hard time filling a 45k stadium on a regular basic.
The reason behind this is not too many students live on campus (or near campus). A TON of students rarely step foot on the main campus and a good number don't live near UCF. 4 of the 5 students I know that attend UCF right now don't live near campus and 2 or the 5 never go to the main campus. Only one attends the football games.
So yes, they have a huge enrollment. But they don't have the same "feel" as BAMA, LSU, etc.

UCF and USF are huge schools, but they largely draw "commuters" and out of towers who just want to go to college in Orlando or Florida. They move back home and couldn't really care about the institution itself.
Granted, that could change some day. USF was making big gains in all sports a while back (before they hired Holtz) but fizzled out. Now UCF has been developing a football program and Florida Gulf Coast is a relatively new college 2+ hours south of Tampa that recently experienced a lot of growth. I think they're up to 20k now.
A pet peeve of mine is that USF is not actually in what is known as South Florida. They should rename the thing to UFTB or University of Tampa Bay, or some shite like that.
