Treeing walkers win pretty much every field trial there is. They're also the easiest to find and can be had for reasonable prices with champion bloodlines.
That said, there are obviously dogs in plenty breeds that are good coon dogs. A treeing walker is your best bet though.

This or a bluetick. Do not buy one trained up north. I made the mistake and the first night out, that dog went nuts. It was trying to tree dillers.
It took some time to break him of that crap.
