You might be right. But the pundits seem to agree that this year's field, had the playoff been in effect, would have included Auburn and Alabama. That's hypothetical, I know, so maybe it's bogus.
And don't you think there are scenarios in which a conference championship game could complicate things rather than settle them? Say, for example, a two-loss Florida team defeated a one-loss Auburn squad in Atlanta; that could open the door for a team that didn't even win its division — say an 11-1 LSU team whose only defeat was a narrow one at Auburn. (I like that scenario!)
