I have an unexpected $300.00 in my pocket from a fantasy football windfall. I'm interested in taking up hog and possibly, in the future, deer hunting. I've only hunted ducks and rabbits in the past.
I'm thinking about picking up this savage 308:
308
Is that a Versatile enough unit for hogs and deer? Is it a decent setup for the price? Would I do better throwing my money in a cookie jar and saving for something better?
I look forward to what y'all have to say.
For your troubles.

First and foremost, I hope you ask a shite load more questions
2nd .308 is a great cartridge for those animals. My only question is, what model savage is it?

SAVAGE AXIS XP PACKAGE GUN 308 WIN W/ SCOPE
What’s in the Box
Savage Axis Rifle
Detachable Box Magazine
Bushnell 3-9x40 Scope
Cable Lock
Ear Plugs
Owner’s Manual
Is that the info you were looking for? I like the pigman on TV and knows he uses ruger 308's. I feel like I've heard good things about Savage as an entry level brand.

Id pass on the Axis, but thats just me.

Okay for startes I wouldn't want newish ear plugs but maybe that's just me. Other than that I think it's a good deal , not smoking but good. A savage model 110 shoots lights out and you could find it with a cheap scope for around the same price. It depends on how much you want to spend as far as saving your money for sow thing else in the future. What's your budget for scope and rifle, if you decided to wait?

Spend the $300 on a good/ decent rifle and max out your spending on a scope in the future, IMO.

The pigman gets paid to like stuff lol. I would pass on an axis because I believe there are better options out there.

I can't see spending more than about $600 - $700 at any point. I want to hunt, but have two little ones, so I would not have many opportunities to get away in the next 2-3 years. That's why I am trying not to invest too much, right now. I plan on having my wee ones shooting at rabbits as soon as they understand what a shotgun can do, but that's years away.
The axis doesn't seem to receive a great review... The 110 you mentioned, is that a better quality unit? Should I look other than Savage?
I asked my SO for a hog hunt for Christmas. Don't know if she came through or not. If I don't get a rifle by then should my Beretta 390 do? I want to give myself the best opportunity to take advantage of the hunt, if I get it? That's why I checked out rifles when I knew I would have an extra $300 to throw around.

My old Daddy always said, "Son, Savage don't make no trash".

With your budget I would recommend a used savage model 110 with a used Nikon monarch. The other option is to buy a new Remington model 700 adl from academy for $379. A new scope for the adl would be a Nikon buckmaster or a used monarch.

I have an axis in 243 and it is a tac puncher. Did buy a different scope for it though.

Got one in 7mm 08 and it's a great gun for the money. I cut a coil or two out of the trigger and put a different scope on it. Shoots great. Dropped a nanny in her tracks on the run this AM.

+1. Can't go wrong with a Rem. 700. Suck it up and put a Goldring (Made in USA) on it and you'll be good for life. Don't skimp on the bases and rings either. Those are equally important.

Do it...... you not a professional hunter. That gun will be fine for your intentions.

I would go with that over the axis in a heartbeat. I'm not saying anything is wrong with the axis but the 700 is, well a 700. My answer for a new gun under $400.00 will always be a Remington model 700. The things you can do with a 700 in the future way out way an axis.
