I was listening to Hanigriff's show Friday and some guru was on there talking about loop holes in the new rule. This is the way he explained it. For example Hootie Jones signed financial aid papers with LSU and Alabama. Which locks the school into him. He is guaranteed a scholarship at which ever school he choses. He is in no way locked in to LSU or Bama. He can still go anywhere he wants, it just means that the school can't back out of their offer. It also means the school has unlimited contact with him during the dead period. I think most of us know about these parts of the new rule. Now here is what he said most ppl don't know. Now lets say Hootie decides he is going to Alabama. Instead he pay his own way for the spring semester. In the fall he enrolls on scholarship and it never counts against the 25 signing limit. They were saying that for sure this loophole would get fixed, I just found it interesting and had never heard of this.

Edit: I had forgotten that he mentioned, the player must not have taken a official visit to the school he enrolled in. This would not apply to Hootie because he took a official there.

They have to give him the scholly, but they can certainly make a recruit feel unwanted by ignoring, among other options, in order to get the recruit to pursue other options.

That is the "cooling" that people refer to

If that's true TOPS would be the greatest help to the ability to recruit. ... ever

Not to make this another Hootie thread... but he's a good example.

Is this the "blueshirt" we are hearing about? Pay the way for one semester?

This really depends on what you mean by signing limit. If you mean the limit of national letters of intent, signing financial aid papers and the like, then this is maybe true. If you mean actual initial counters (i.e. those athletes that receive institutional aid for the first time), I don't see it. There is nothing in the rules that really suggests it.

WRT the NLI, the rule, as written, pretty much states that a midyear (i.e. EE) doesn't count against the limit. However, no school in the SEC has done this over the past two years. The SEC seems to be treating NLIs and initial counters the same. But that may be due to the schools knowing the intent behind the rule and not what was actually written.

In the NCAA there is a difference between the NLI stuff and initial counter. In your example Hootie would be an initial counter when he gets the aid and it would have to fit withing the 25 for this year.

ive always said 25 means nothing. 85 is the number. Coaches find ways around the 25, you cant find ways around the 85.

I feel like the NCAA would not allow this at all.
