Buy a house or rent

I'll be graduating very soon, and I'm pretty sure the company I plan on working for will require me to travel a bit; 3months-1 year at a time possibly. I will get paid per diem when out of town which would cover renting expenses. Would it be best for me to attempt to buy a house right after graduation or rent for a year or two and then buy?
*Seems to me I'd be wasting my money if I rent in two cities instead of owning in the city I technically live in and renting for out of town jobs. I'm very uneducated in the housing market and you all have been helpful every time I've come here so I figured I'd start here for guidance. Excuse any typos, posted from my phone.

Definately rent.
Sounds like you will need to either cut down your possessions to the bare minimum or rent a storage place. For times when you plan to be "home" I would try to find short term motnhly rentals or a room mate.

I think you'd really need to know your work situation before making that kind of decision.
Are you single? Do your parents live in the same town that your work is based out of? If yes to both, I would suggest living with them until you get a feel for the amount of travel you will be doing.

I'm in a pretty serious relationship. If I was single this would be a little easier. My parents live an hour away from here.
I'm graduating from LSU and my work is based out of Baton Rouge.

Serious enough to move in together? Seems like that would solve the issue pretty well, but obviously that means rent.

Moving together was discussed but isn't really an option. She's about to go to grad school and even beyond that she wouldn't be able to hold a steady job if she moved with me every time I had to travel. The option of her moving with me after grad school is open if I just support us but then what's the point of her going to grad school, and she also does not want to stay at home.

I meant moving in together in BR, and you'd just be gone when you have to work. It would lessen the amount you have to pay to have a place in your home base.

That's the plan
Just wasn't sure if I should buy or rent a home in the "home base".
Buying-my money is actually increasing its worth
Renting- just giving money away

If you think you'll be in BR long term, then buying could work for you. Where are you considering living? I have a friend with a house for sale

Haven't really started to pinpoint an area yet. I just recently read about rural development loans today and there are some nice houses in prairieville. What's considered long term? I'm pretty sure I'll be here for at least 5-8 years. Where's your buddies house?

Long enough to consider purchasing IMO. But I would look at a 15 year note so you build equity more quickly.

Broadmoor.

Thanks for the help! I won't be looking to actually buy until around may. I'm sure he'll have sold it by then.

I know he hopes so Good luck with whatever you decide. Wife and I are in the process of buying our first house now.
