My question is, isn't part of Texas' main problem that Mack doesn't kill himself recruiting at all?

Don't they just make all their offers on their Junior Day and set the recruiting classes then? Isn't that one of the reasons he's missed out on some of the talent (Johnny Football and Winston) that has wanted to go to Texas but wasn't included in their Junior Day offers?

Yep, that about covers it. Texas has a few problems, most of them are directly attributed to Mack Brown.

He's an exceptionally lazy recruiter, and like you said, they pretty much solidify their class at Junior Day. They pretty much exclusively recruit in-state when they should be consistently cherry picking from surrounding states like Oklahoma, Missouri (which actually produces a ton of talent), Louisiana, and going into other states and into the West.

Plus - and I might catch flack for this - Texas is not this end-all-be-all of unquestioned football talent everyone makes it out to be. Yes, they produce a lot of highly rate kids, but Texas high school football has really shifted over the course of the past decade to a pass-happy spread heavy scheme, and the state is producing too many soft kids who just throw and catch. Whereas, states in the South are producing the monsters you've been seeing at LSU, Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, and Florida. I've said it before and I'll say it again: I'd take the top 5 from Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia or Florida over the top 5 from Texas any day.

He and his staff are notorious site recruiters and awful evaluators of talent. You have to be able to spot the 3 stars (like Manziel) who are more talented than their rankings and you have to spot the 4 stars project better at different positions (like Griffin). Also, and most importantly, they've been extremely bad at developing the talent they have. That alone will make your football program stagnant.
