With old black leather combat boots, the tried and true was "fill with hot water, put on thick socks and walk them dry" and seemed to speed up the process of breaking them in for about a week.
Modern boots seem more compliant, but it is also important to get the correct size.
That said, other than correct sizing (and good socks), wearing them to break them in is about the only way get past the blister phase.
