The going price of free agency and the market for marquee talent. I'm surprised the Yankees let him go and I'm surprised Cano left New York. He should make the Mariners fans happy for the next 5 years.

It's impossible to put into words how little I care about major league baseball, and I can't think of a single friend or acquaintance that does. I think MLB fandom is dropping fast in the younger generation and this absurdity doesn't help

Just seems like an Angels - Toronto type move. Someone was going to pay him for sure, I just wouldn't want it to be my team.

They certainly outbidded themselves. But if they didn't, he'd still be a Yankee... or somewhere else. Certainly not a Mariner.

I'm glad the Yankees didn't overpay, but this makes no sense after the Ellsbury contract. Ellsbury for $22M a year or Cano for $24M a year. What the frick.

Becomes the 6th 200 million dollar contract.

1. A-Rod 10 yr/$252 million (Rangers-Yankees)
2. A-Rod 10 yr/$275 million (Yankees)
3. Pujols 10 yr/$240 million (Angels)
4. Votto 10 yr/$224 million
5. Fielder 9 yr/$214 million (Tigers-Rangers)
6. Cano 10 yr/$240 million (Mariners)

Lets review how those worked out:

1. A-Rod, traded from Rangers to Yankees
2. A-Rod, steroid aided production has fallen..injuries mounting. Yankees hoping desperately his suspension gets them off the hook for the contract.
3. Pujols has been a complete disaster in Los Angeles. Past his prime and suffering from injuries.
4. Played 2 seasons in Detroit before being shipped off to the Rangers.

History suggests the Mariners are going to regret this and want out sooner rather than later.

I know it sounds crazy to us but a lot of the younger people these days view rich and successful people as greedy bad guys. Stupid little fricks!!!

Votto is in a 10/225 contract.

So because you and your friends don't like baseball, that means fandom is dropping fast?

they have very little payroll and they had no cornerstone bat. They just got one.

It wont be a great contract in 8 years, but in order to get someone like that, you have to go that length. In the short term it should be worth it. something they can build around
