I don't understand why a director can't have more than 1 masterpiece. I can think of several artists I would consider to have multiple masterpieces.

You're right and not only can someone make strong cases for Rushmore, Tenenbaums, and Bottle Rocket as masterpieces but I think Fantastic Mr. Fox is one of the best movies of the past decade.
