This. All it would have taken was for a small fragment to break off when it hit the rib and deflect into the spine. Mammals are fragile critters.

was the exit from a deformed bullet or from a small non marred round?

Trauma to the spine likely.
I shot a small buck like that with a muzzeloader. Close range. Primer seemed to miss a split second then fired. Hit him WAY back no exit wound. Found bullet closer to his arse than his lungs with no damage to major organs and tiny amount of blood but fell where he stood.
Sometimes you just get lucky.
