I've heard you should start with season 5. Then, if you like it, go back and watch the other seasons.
Disclaimer, I have not tried this method, and I have had the same experience as you with the show.

You will only hear this from hipster Who fans. Everyone has their own favorite Dr. Hipsters seem to like Matt Smith more than Tennant, and they like Moffatt over Davies (I agree on the latter).
