Yes and Yes. And this isn't some new innovation either. Teams have done this for years. I am pretty sure I saw the lions do this with Calvin Johnson before also.
It's just more like whoever gives you the best shot at a jump ball.
They practice everything in the NFL, down to kneeling the ball.
