I think you're completely right, it's not like we have even a small fraction of STH's or the TV audience posting here. But just because they aren't posting online doesn't necessarily mean what's discussed here is unrepresentative of what the "average fan" discusses.

Also, as far as us not shaping the discussion of the "average fan", I believe 42 has alluded to 10,000+ subscribers to the BSS podcast in the past, and McNamara has referred to 50,000 downloading a podcast. I don't know how accurate those numbers are nor do I have any clue how much traffic we get here, but if the BSS podcast numbers are anywhere in the ballpark then what is discussed on this board by "obnoxious know it alls" is most definitely shaping what the "average fan" discusses just like news sites affect what is discussed at the water cooler in offices around the country. Why do you think the TP cut back the print issues? It's because more and more people are getting their news from blogs like BSS and from news aggregation sites like TD. You don't have to post here to come here regularly. They used to have a lurker to member count before the site got big and there were always way more lurkers than members.
