Would be a really poor decision to keep him. I don't think that they will.

Imagine if they decide to go with someone else and he doesn't do well...fans and players alike will be PISSED that Coach O didn't get a shot

Not really. The fans want to keep him. He's at least earned a shot.
Besides, if you look at USC last two head coaching hires (Caroll and Kiffin) it's not like either was "proven".

Coach O's coaching resume says a lot more about his abilities to be a HC than 5 games at a top flight school like USC. He would have the Trojans on probation in 2-3 yrs and they would be back where they were with LK. He's a great recruiter because he cheats his arse off. Admittedly, his persona is fun and makes people feel good. And then over time, the reality of what he really is as a coach and a person sets in.
