If you watch close you can see Gronk start to move to curl back to the ball and Luke is already wrapped around him and forcing him backwards. If Luke isn't touching him like that he can easily come up and attempt to fight for the ball.

This is precisely what I'm seeing. Look at the spot of the catch, the Gronks foot plant and the timing, he would have been right there if not held.

Why were the announcers saying "deep in the endzone"? He was about 3 feet away from it.

It's bizarre to me how it was characterized by the announcers because I heard them first before looking at it closely and couldn't believe I was watching the same thing they were.
