I typically get bored around the modern era and want to try a new faction.
I use to be like that until I started testing out other civs. King Neb and the Babylonians have become my favorite civ. Their perks line up perfectly with my usual strategy. I prefer to lay low and allow world politics to run its course until the modern era.
Babylon gets bowman before most civs get archers, Walls of Babylon offer better defense bonus and HP, upon discovering writing you get a great scientist and you generate great scientist at a 50% faster rate. Towards the middle of the game I can be anywhere from 5-8 techs ahead of the next AI.

They're a great civ to learn with. I still like playing with them from time to time. Great science & solid defensive capabilities. I haven't had much luck going domination with them (haven't really pressed the issue either), but I don't think I've ever even lost a city to the AI with them.
