Fences get messed up by trees ALL of the time. Offer to ride around the property and check out the fence, taking notes of what the deer are doing on the way. shite, I'd even make up some stuff about seeing big buck tracks in an area.
Make your son talk to him and whatnot. I know I hunted for free until I was 23 on my dad's lease because I did a lot of off season work and the guy running it saw me grow up for 10 years. Kind of took me under his wing.
Good time to introduce your son to the woods while not hunting also. He might appreciate it more.
Bring some stuff to bbq one time. High fence areas are $$$. Maybe you can get in on the cheap if you get on his very good side.
