Sports Illustrated estimated in 2009 that 78 percent of NFL players are bankrupt or facing serious financial stress within two years of ending their playing careers and that 60percent of NBA players are broke within five years of retiring from the game
USA Today Article really makes me think about the situation of paying college athletes. I am not saying they do not deserve a cut, maybe split merchandise sales with them. But the best payment these guys can get is learning how to properly manage their finances. And make them have some sort of a degree before they leave even if it is just an associates.

Many NFL players come from poverty.
When you come from poverty, you can't fathom a million dollars. It literally seems infinite to you.
That's why a lot of lotto winners go bankrupt too.

Like trying to pay for multiple house and awesome toys? Woe is them.

What constitutes a NFL player? Is every undrafted free agent considered an NFL player?
It's not that surprising that the percentage is that large when most of them might be on a team for a couple years max and most aren't signing multimillion contracts.

They make millions of dollars. If they don't know how to handle it, then it's their own damn fault.

so they can manage money poorly while they are still in college?

Matt "LTD" Flynn will be part of that statistic.

The players tend to have short careers, a lot of expenses, and individuals sponging money off of them.

Every college athlete intending to play professionally should get a finance degree. If the schools are going to make them take classes at all, then they should be focusing their time and effort on the one thing that will make or break their financial futures, whether in the professional sports world or professional business

Where do these guys go at this point?
Coaching? Sales jobs?
Always wondered where they end up.

One lived across the street from me-played a good while, had a super bowl ring. He spent lots of money and had some beautiful cars. He went bankrupt and moved out (he was foreclosed upon) abruptly. The worst part was he left his bird there to die-which it did.

Going on 15k Vegas trips and making other people pay for 30k dinners probably doesn't teach a lot of fiscal responsibility.

That's what posse's do to a guy, drain him of spendable cash. Not to mention an extravagant lifestyle and no common sense. No sympathy.

Most of these NFL players will not only be broke but their health will be in shambles. They will age well before their years along with lifelong pain. It is much better to make money with your mind than with your body. Playing in the NFL is a double edged sword. Many of these players don't exactly have promising careers waiting for them post retirement either.

Makes sense most of them have never had money before and don't know what to do with it or invest and how to save it

There's absolutely nothing I could have less concern for is multimillionaire athletes and entertainers that waste their money on a rap video lifestyle.
There's people that raise their family on an income that's less than these team dinners they make the rookies pay for. Sympathy for wasteful rich people is something I'll never have.

Ryan Fitzpatrick needs to be a financial adviser to NFL players once he retires. Economics degree from Harvard? I would trust him with my money and he knows what its like to be given all that money and knows how it all can bleed out quickly.
He could make SOOO much money doing this. They would all trust him because he's "one of them".
I agree they should all be required to take a full college course geared towards their exact situation and managing their finances.
